I learned that dyslexia comes from two Greek words; DYS meaning abnormal or impaired and LEXIA meaning language or words. Research has shown that dyslexia happens because of the way the brain processes information. It is usually runs in families. The thing that I found extremely interesting from this website was this comment “Most people think that dyslexia causes people to reverse letters and numbers and see words backwards. However, that is not necessarily true. Reversals occur as a normal part of development and not only seen in people with dyslexia.
Growing up reading/writing was not my strongest area. When I read aloud I found myself sometimes getting ahead of myself and witching the order of words around. I often was jumping around in the text. Something that is common in most beginning readers. The main problem people have with dyslexia is phonemes. The sound and letter symbol connection and how to blend sounds into words. This I found to be particularly true in my friend I had told you about earlier. She confused words like dog and god mall and wall. She also had a hard time when she tried and pronounced words. She often was using decoding skills to help her.
